Little Things Matter

Plastics are everywhere and in all of us.
It's time to take action.

World leaders are gathering in Ottawa from April 23 – 29, 2024 to create a legally binding document on plastic pollution, aimed at reducing the amount of plastics in our environment and regulating harmful chemicals in plastic.

This is especially important for children’s health. Children are unequally burdened by the negative effects of harmful chemicals in plastic like BPA, phthalates, flame-retardants, and PFAS. And childhood is wrapped in plastic; 90% of toys on the market are plastic, 25% of baby food is now purchased in plastic pouches, more than 33% of toddlers eat from a plastic pouch at lunch-time and 82% of baby bottles are polypropylene which shed millions of microplastics every day.

Shouldn’t there be a warning label on products for phthalates and other toxic chemicals found in plastics!? We think so. One place manufacturers hide plastic-chemicals is behind the term “fragrance”. Fragrance isn’t regulated by Government since it could include “trade secrets” – and it should be regulated!

Many plastic products include harmful chemicals that aren't adequately tested before they are put to market. BPA, a chemical that makes plastic harder and durable, is a good example. Industry knew BPA disrupted hormones—like estrogen and adiponectin—but continued to use it in consumer products.

Plastic particles in the body release harmful chemicals like flame retardants, phthalates, PFAS, and BPA. Toxic chemicals like flame retardants can cause cancer and change the way the brain works. PFAS and BPA affect hormone signaling, reducing fertility and changing the ways children’s brains develop.

Microplastics are extremely small fragments of plastic products and packaging that are made from over 16,000 chemicals! Scientists found thousands of chemicals in everyday plastic products. Yet only 6% are subject to international regulations.
