Yikes! The average person already eats 50,000 plastic pieces a year, multiply that times three and human beings are going to exponentially increase the amount of plastic in their body.
Plastic particles in the body release harmful chemicals like flame retardants, phthalates, PFAS, and BPA. Toxic chemicals like flame retardants can cause cancer and change the way the brain works. PFAS and BPA affect hormone signaling, reducing fertility and changing the ways children’s brains develop.
Infants and small children have 10x more plastic in their poop than adults. Plastic in the GI tract can change the way developing bodies absorb and digest food. Human beings are not designed to digest plastic.
Plastic poses significant threats to humans and the environment. At the current rate we are set to triple our plastic waste by 2060….
Did you know that plastics are made from oil and gas refining by-products? And some of the chemicals used, like benzene and vinyl chloride, cause cancer! As plastics break down, the chemicals used in their production or added afterward leach out and create new compounds. These compounds might be even more harmful than the original ones.
The excessive use of plastic, compounded by its unique difficulty to recycle, is causing a major problem; plastic is ending up in our babies, oceans, beaches, and wildlife!
